Our Beliefs

We are a diverse community of believers rooted in the Wesleyan tradition. We hold to the General Rule of Discipleship which is to witness to Jesus Christ in the world, and to follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion under the guidance of the Spirit.

For us there are clear guidelines for living as followers of the way that we see in Jesus. John Wesley summarized these as follows:

• First: Do no harm, by avoiding evil of every kind…

• Secondly: By doing all the good of every possible sort, as far as possible, to all…

• Thirdly: To stay in love with God by attending upon the ordinances of God: prayer, worship, the Lord’s Supper, Scripture, fasting or abstinence…

As United Methodists, we hold basic beliefs in common with most other Christian churches, including faith in God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and salvation by grace. Our weekly teachings are grounded in Scripture, informed by Christian tradition, enlivened by personal experience, and tested with reason.

Above all, we emphasize God’s loving offer of relationship to every person and so we welcome everyone to join us at God’s table. This means that while we consider what Christians believe to be important, we place the emphasis on right hearts over right beliefs. In practice, this means we are a diverse group, united by our love of God and neighbor. It also means that we try to balance personal faith with mission service to our brothers and sisters both locally and globally. So, following the guidance of Scripture and that of the Spirit, we seek to lead with our hearts, keeping our minds open, as we welcome everyone into the family of Grace with open doors and arms.
